Project Overview
iFluids Engineering conducted a comprehensive Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Classification Study for Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) as part of the Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG Pipeline (KGPL) project, which spans across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
The study focused on critical installations in Madhya Pradesh, aiming to evaluate Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) and assign appropriate SIL ratings. This ensured pipeline operations were aligned with international safety standards enhancing reliability, process safety, and regulatory compliance.
Scope of Work
The study was carried out at 10 key installations in Madhya Pradesh, as mentioned below.
- IPS Indore
- Dhureri T-Point
- BPC Indore
- Mundla Hasan T-Point
- IOCL Ujjain
- HPC Indore
- IOCL Bhopal
- HPC Bhopal
- BPC Bhopal
- P-Bina Terminal
Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs) were identified and evaluated based on detailed instrumentation data, P&IDs, and control logic diagrams.
Our Methodology
The SIL classification study was conducted in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 guidelines, using the Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) methodology.
- Reviewing Probability of Failure on Demand (PFDavg) and Safe Failure Fraction (SFF)
- Identifying Independent Protection Layers (IPLs)
- Utilizing structured SIL Classification Worksheets
- All evaluations were validated by a TÜV-certified Functional Safety Professional
What We Delivered
- Delivered a detailed SIL Classification Report with loop-wise documentation
- Provided 1-year post-study support for regulatory clarifications
Final Outcome
This SIL Classification Study enabled IOCL to implement robust, compliant, and auditable safety measures across their LPG pipeline network. By aligning each SIF with defined risk reduction targets, iFluids Engineering helped improve operational safety and ensure readiness for future audits and system upgrades.
With our structured LOPA-based approach and safety requirement evaluation, the client received precise, actionable documentation to support both internal risk management and external compliance mandates.
