Qatar Petroleum (QP) is a state-owned public corporation established in 1974. Qatar Petroleum is in charge of all aspects of the oil and gas industry in Qatar. The main activities of QP, its subsidiaries, and joint ventures are the exploration, production, local and international sale of crude oil, natural gas and gas liquids, refined products, synthetic fuels, petrochemicals, fuel additives, fertilizers, liquefied natural gas (LNG), steel, and aluminium. QP owns and operates a Refinery at Mesaieed, located about 35 Km. South of Doha City in the State of Qatar.
The project was awarded to iFluids Engineering on a consultancy basis to study, research, and evaluate specific insurance risk observations / recommendations made by QP Insurance Assessors relating to QP Refinery.
Scope of Work
- Study reports & recommendations from Phase-1, Consultancy for Refinery Insurance Survey Recommendations at QP refinery, Mesaieed
- Study observations and recommendations related to Passive Fire Proofing, Fire escalation, Pool Fires, and Jet Fires
- Assessment of consequence analysis related to Fire Escalation / Pool Fires including:
a) Pool fire leading to running liquid fire
In fire zones susceptible to pool fire, the fires should be controlled from spreading across the floor into adjacent zones and equipment. It is recommended that kerbing and drainage is installed in each discrete fire zone to capture and limit liquid fire spread and to assist the fire team in controlling the fire by the application of a foam blanket seal.
b) Pool and jet fires in compressor house
It is recommended that the consequence analysis is used to review the duration and intensity of pool fire and jet fires with respect to the Steelwork supporting compressor house such that the structure does not fail in a fire scenario. It is recommended that passive fire protection be applied to all compressor houses structural supports deemed vulnerable by such analysis.
