HAZOP Study for 2 X 50 MLD DESIGN & BUILD OF DESALINATION PLANT ON BARGES

Last updated: May 18, 2026

CLIENT: TECTON ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION LLC
END CLIENT: AD PORTS GROUP

PROJECT BACKGROUND AND SCOPE

This project pertains to an AD Ports seawater desalination facility, for which a HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) study was conducted to ensure safe and reliable operation across the entire process system. This HAZOP Study, Abu Dhabi assignment involved a facility comprising seawater intake, pretreatment, ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO) desalination and post-treatment units designed to produce potable-quality water. The HAZOP scope covered all major process sections including seawater intake screens and pumping systems, self-cleaning filters, UF membranes and associated chemical dosing systems, RO high-pressure systems with energy recovery devices and post-treatment units  such as remineralization and chlorination systems.

METHODOLOGY

The HAZOP Study, Abu Dhabi for the AD Ports seawater treatment system was carried out using PHA Pro software through structured, face-to-face workshop sessions involving multidisciplinary stakeholders. The overall system was systematically divided into 20 nodes covering all major process areas including seawater intake, filtration, UF, RO trains, chemical dosing systems, energy recovery systems and post-treatment units. For each node, process deviations were identified using standard HAZOP guidewords, and causes, consequences, existing safeguards and risk levels were evaluated. Based on the team review, a total of 15 recommendations were generated. These recommendations were primarily focused on strengthening process safety and operability by addressing gaps in protection layers such as high-high level alarms, interlock logics for pump trips, pressure protection through PSV/PRV verification, overflow and drainage arrangements, containment provisions and enhancement of instrumentation and control philosophy. Additional recommendations also included design clarifications, PID updates, vendor scope alignment and validation of high-pressure scenarios to ensure robust system integrity.

The methodology followed in workshop is described below.

OUTCOME

The study concluded that all identified deviations were either adequately safeguarded by existing design provisions or effectively addressed through the proposed recommendations. After implementing and considering these recommendations, the residual risks across all nodes were assessed to be reduced to an ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) level. No unacceptable risks were identified and the overall system was found to be operable and compliant with applicable safety standards, ensuring safe and reliable operation of the facility.

CONCLUSION

The HAZOP Study for the AD Ports seawater treatment system was successfully completed by iFluids Engineering Abu Dhabi. The study covered key process areas including seawater intake, filtration, UF, RO trains, chemical dosing, energy recovery, and post-treatment systems. This project demonstrates our capability to deliver structured process safety studies for desalination, water treatment, marine infrastructure, and industrial utility systems.
